Our Advocacy Work

The Maine Academy of Family Physicians (MAFP) is committed to advancing policies that strengthen family medicine and improve the health of all people in Maine.

Through engagement at both the state and federal levels, MAFP ensures the voice of family physicians is heard in legislative, regulatory, and public health decision‑making.

Our advocacy work supports our mission of improving health statewide by promoting and advancing the specialty of family medicine.

MAFP regularly provides news, policy updates, and advocacy resources to keep members informed and engaged. The organization also communicates important regulatory updates, such as DEA licensing requirements and statewide initiatives, through its newsletters and announcements.

How MAFP Advocates

Doctor of the Day: MAFP supports physician participation in “Doctor of the Day” programs, which connect family physicians directly with lawmakers at the State House. Through this presence, physicians serve as clinical resources, build relationships with legislators, and provide real‑world insight into the impact of healthcare policy on patients and practices.

Legislative Testimony: MAFP encourages and supports members in providing testimony—both written and in person—on bills and policies that affect family medicine, public health, workforce development, and patient access. Through testimony, MAFP brings physician expertise directly into the legislative process and advocates for evidence‑based, patient‑centered decision‑making.

Advocacy Alerts & Policy Updates: MAFP keeps members informed through regular updates on policy issues, regulatory changes, and news affecting family physicians. The Academy also distributes newsletters covering federal and state advocacy efforts, member experiences, and public health initiatives.

These updates help physicians stay aware of emerging issues, engage with legislative processes, and support timely action when member involvement is most needed.

Member Involvement: Physicians, residents, and students across Maine help shape the Academy’s advocacy priorities through participation in meetings, educational forums, and community engagement efforts. MAFP also promotes student and resident involvement through programs like Doctof for a Day, which fosters interest in family medicine and helps build future advocacy leaders.

Our Commitment

MAFP remains dedicated to protecting and strengthening family medicine by:

  • Elevating the physician voice in legislative decision‑making
  • Promoting policies that expand access to high‑quality primary care
  • Supporting the sustainability and growth of Maine’s family medicine workforce
  • Advocating for the health and well‑being of Maine’s patients and communities

Through active engagement, clear communication, and strong partnerships, we ensure that family medicine continues to play a central role in Maine’s healthcare system.
