Student and Resident Outreach
The Maine Academy of Family Physicians is deeply committed to supporting the next generation of family physicians. Through hands‑on learning experiences, mentorship, and collaborative programs with medical schools and training institutions across the state, MAFP helps inspire and equip students and residents as they explore careers in family medicine.
Sports Medicine Workshop
On January 8, 2026, MAFP partnered with the Maine Medical Center Department of Family Medicine to host an immersive Sports Medicine Workshop for 1st- and 2nd‑year medical students from the University of New England College of Medicine and the Tufts Maine Track. Dr. Marco Cornelio opened the evening with an overview of opportunities available through both MAFP and AAFP, followed by practical skill‑building sessions led by MMC Sports Medicine Fellows, Collin Leibold and Sanath Srivastava. Students rotated through interactive stations focused on joint exams and musculoskeletal ultrasound, gaining valuable hands‑on clinical exposure. The workshop was supported and coordinated by FMIG co‑directors, Dr. Vicki Hayes and Dr. Lauren Boehm.
Programs like this reflect MAFP’s dedication to cultivating curiosity, strengthening clinical skills, and building meaningful connections among students, residents, and practicing family physicians. By investing in early training and mentorship, MAFP continues to support a strong and thriving primary care workforce for Maine.
Specialty Guidance, Advising and Exploration
On January 16, 2026, the first‑ever TUSM SAGE (Specialty Guidance, Advising and Exploration) Presentation Panel featuring Family Medicine was held in Maine. This milestone event brought together a dynamic group of Family Physicians—Dr. Jessica Faraci, Dr. Alison Samitt, Dr. Lauren Boehm, and Family Medicine Resident Dr. Jenna Elkhoury—who shared their experiences, perspectives, and passion for the specialty. The panelists offered candid insights into the breadth and fulfillment of family medicine, followed by an engaging Q&A session with students.
The event was coordinated and hosted by Dr. Vicki Hayes, faculty co‑advisor of the Maine Medical Center FMIG, with support from the Maine Academy of Family Physicians. Approximately 20 medical students from the TUSM Maine Track and UNECOM attended, participating both in person and virtually via Zoom. This inaugural SAGE session represents another meaningful step in MAFP’s ongoing commitment to mentorship, career exploration, and strengthening Maine’s future primary care workforce.
