Doc4aDay:

On Friday May 17th, Vicki Hayes MD (MAFP member and Faculty, MMC Dept of Medical Education, and Tufts FMIG Medical Advisor) and Shelly Chipman RN conducted another Doc4aDay program for high school students at the Hannaford Center for Safety, Innovation and Simulation. 16 students from Portland High School and Deering High School attended. 3 Tufts University School of Medicine Maine Track students and 5 University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine students participated as teachers during the event.

Doc4aDay is a community outreach program provided through the Maine Medical Center Department of Medical Education. It is a half-day program designed to spark an interest in a career in health care by targeting historically marginalized high school students who show academic promise. Doc4aDay provides an introduction about the pathway to becoming a physician, a hands-on suturing segment in the skills lab, participation in high-fidelity simulated patient scenarios and a question-and-answer session with current medical students.  Vicki and Shelly have worked in partnership for over ten years to deliver this valuable program. For the past few years, MAFP has provided financial support for this opportunity hoping to encourage young adults in communities under-represented in medicine to become physicians (and hopefully family physicians!).

If any MAFP member is interested in hosting Doc4aDay in their community in the future, please email Vicki Hayes MD at vickihayes@gmail.com

FMIG (Family Medicine Interest Group) Event:

On the evening of March 26th, the Maine Medical Center Dept of Family Medicine hosted a Sports Medicine Workshop for third year medical students in the TUSM Maine Track. Dr. Marco Cornelio presented a brief overview of opportunities with the MAFP and AAFP. MMC Sports Medicine Fellows, Paul Kehoe and Matt Migliozzi, with the support of Dr. Mark Bouchard, conducted a hands-on workshop. The medical students rotated through stations that involved joint exams and musculoskeletal ultrasound applications. A big thanks to Dr. Vicki Hayes and Dr. Lauren Boehm (co-directors of the Tufts MMC FMIG) for coordinating this event and introducing medical students to our great specialty!
